HBO nicely tackles the transgendered issue with this tender
story of a couple celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary only to discover
through counseling that one of the two is suffering from gender dysphoria.
Tom Wilkinson (In the Bedroom) gives a moving performance as Roy,
a small-town factory worker determined to pursue sex reassignment surgery,
with Jessica Lange equally as engaging as the wife struggling to support
him. Normal does an admirable job of exploring all the issues at
work here -- Roy's relationships with his wife, his children and his co-workers
-- while never degrading into a mushy, preachy movie-of-week. The DVD includes
director's commentary, cast and filmmaker bios and is in full-screen format.
